Doon rock and well

And after the flight of the Earls, Doon rock became used as one of the many Mass rocks in Ireland, where Mass was celebrated in secret in the time of the penal years (1695 – 1741).

The Priests said mass under the threat of death. If caught they faced a horrendous death such as being placed into a barrel of nails and thrown over a cliff. This was called ‘Binn an Sagairt’ (hill of the priest) which is located near Doon.

Doon Rock is an historical site where some 25 o'Donnells of the powerful o’Donnell clan which ruled Tyrconnell (County Donegal), were inaugurated as chieftains over the centuries until the 1600’s.

Legend tells us that the nearby well (Doon well) became a holy well in the 15th century following the death of a powerful healer and a very holy man, Lector O’Friel. It is believed that before he died, and as a comfort to the people who came to him for help, he said, “When I die, my powers will live on after me.” With this, he blessed the well and told them that those who drank or applied the water would benefit from his prayers of intercession.
